Dry skin lacks oil rather than water. It can often feel tight and uncomfortable, almost as if it's been stretched. Severe dry skin can flake and even peel or crack. The key here is to replenish the lost oil and to keep the surface smooth and supple.
You have dry skin if your skin has the following characteristics:
- Feels uncomfortable and tight, especially after washing.
- It can peel, flake and look scaly and lined.
- Looks older as its rough, dull surface does not reflect the light very effectively.
You will need to cleanse the skin with a rich, creamy cleanser rather than a facial wash. This will emulsify make up and remove impurities. If you wish to use a toner, chose one that is alcohol free and so won't dry the skin. If your skin is very dry however you may wish to avoid this altogether. Your moisturiser should be one designed for dry skin that is oil rich and may contain a sun protection. To compliment your moisturiser and to replenish the skin further try a penetrating night cream or serum. An eye cream will be essential to moisturise this delicate area and protect from fine lines.
Make sure your diet includes oily fish and olive oil as these provide essential oils for the skin. Avoid the direct sun and smoking if possible. Alcohol will also dry the skin further.
