When you think of MAC makeup, supermodels, fashion shows and rich, vividly lush colors most likely come to mind. No cosmetics company has made such a splash as Makeup Art Cosmetics, more commonly known as MAC. But while you see the models, actresses and gals on the street flaunting these top-notch quality products, the public rarely sees the people behind the company. The two founders of MAC have remained such a mystery that no photos of them were able to be associated with this very article! But what we do have is their history.
A One-Man Band
Even though there is little biographical information on MAC's founder and CEO, Frank Toskan, his legacy and fame relating to his company is known. Toskan first worked as a Canadian hairstylist, makeup artist and photographer, according to Cosmeticdiscounter.com. Out of anyone, Toskan was the very person who could accurately speak on what the cosmetic and beauty world did and did not need.
Through his keen eyes and work experience, Toskan realized that the various makeup lines currently used during fashion photo shoots weren't strong enough to stand out among the intense and harsh glare from the lighting equipment. Tired of seeing great makeup work lost in photography, Frank Toskan developed his own line of professional cosmetics.
Cookin' in the Kitchen
Equipped with a kitchen table and a chemistry book, Toskan began to develop his line. Lucky enough to have a chemist for a brother-in-law, Victor Casale helped Toskan refine his products and create more colors, according to Cosmeticdiscounter.com. Not long afterwards, Frank Toskan met and partnered up with a veteran entrepreneur and former owner of a beauty salon chain named Frank Angelo. While the two had an amazing line of products to offer, they met with some challenges in the beginning. Bank after bank refused to work with them and the two resorted to mortgaging what they could in order to get the company off the ground, according to Wikipedia.org. Their sacrifice paid off.
All for One
With Frank Toskan's extensive experience in the fashion photography industry and Frank Angelo's business sense, Makeup Art Cosmetics became a sensational hit and quickly spread its line to include projects in film, stage and video. Over the last 10 years, MAC cosmetics has introduced 160 shades of lipstick in seven different finishes, 150 eye shadows, 60 blushes and also includes a special line of hair care, according to Cosmeticdiscounter.com.
Through their combined efforts, the two business partners were able to make their vision of a cosmetics line that would be for all ages, all races and all sexes, a reality. In fact, "All ages, all races, all sexes" became the company's motto and has stayed true to it ever since.
