Beauty professionals can learn to help women cancer patients

The American Cancer Society will have its next "Look Good, Feel Better" volunteer training class for licensed beauty professionals March 26 at The Villages Regional Hospital, Classroom 2, 1451 El Camino Real, starting at 10 a.m.

The four-hour class will offer training in beauty and skin-care techniques, and tips for disguising hair loss of women who are undergoing cancer treatment.

"Look Good, Feel Better" is a free, nonmedical, product-neutral program offered by a partnership of the American Cancer Society; the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association Foundation; and the National Cosmetology Association.

Water authority workdays

The Lake County Water Authority and Preserve Pal invite volunteers to participate in an outdoor workday from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Bourlay Historic Nature Park.

Volunteers will collect and remove seedpods from exotic ear trees on the property. The seeds germinate easily and overtake desired native vegetation.

The park is off Canal Street on the southwest shore of Lake Griffin in Leesburg.

Another workday is planned for 9:30 a.m. to noon March 29 at the Treasure Island Preserve in Leesburg. Volunteers will remove air-potato vines from the preserve property. Local homeowners may participate. Details: 352-343-3777, Ext. 88.

Spring Fling event

Members of Chapter ID, a local PEO Sisterhood, are planning a fundraising luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Juanita Gregg Family Life Center at Morrison United Methodist Church, 1005 Main St., Leesburg.

Area women are invited. The program will include professional storytellers, lunch and a silent auction. Baked goods will be sold. Proceeds raised will be used for educational scholarships and grants.

Annual Leesburg fish fry

The 11th annual Leesburg Partnership Spring Fish Fry will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 5 -- rain or shine -- at the historic Mote-Morris House at West Magnolia and South 11th streets. The event this year is taking place in conjunction with Leesburg's yearlong Sesquicentennial (1857-2007) celebration.

The all-you-can-eat affair will offer authentic Southern cooking with entrees including fried catfish and pollock, roasted oysters, corn on the cob, collard greens, hush puppies, cheese grits, coleslaw, navy beans, corn bread, Key lime pie and two beverages.

M.T. Pawkett's Traveling Folk Revue will perform traditional and pop folk, blues and country music.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children younger than 13 and can be purchased at the Leesburg Partnership office, 111 S. Sixth St.
