François Nars dishes about the conception of his wildly popular NARS 'Orgasm' blush and the possibility of more products in the peachy-pink shade.
The perfect peachy-pink hue, infused with golden flecks, is what makes NARS Orgasm blush one of the most beloved beauty products on the shelf today. It's radiant on almost any skin tone.
Orgasm blush was introduced in 1999, and its cult-like popularity drove the creation of its sister product, Orgasm lip gloss. Each has earned the accolades of beauty editors across the world, making the duo something of a mini-brand. The two helped establish a loyal following to François Nars' entire line of products.
Company officials won't disclose sales of each product by volume, but we do know that the blush is its No. 1 seller by a significant margin. Trailing behind is Laguna bronzer and Orgasm lip gloss.
While Nars says there's the possibility for more Orgasm products – a lipstick, eye shadow or nail polish, perhaps – he's not spilling exactly what or when that might be.
There is a bit of a theme behind the names of NARS cosmetics. Nars uses towns, cities, beaches or movies and, of course, feelings. Nars talks about his creative process for developing his beloved shades and those notorious names, though not necessarily in that order.
Q.Why did you create Orgasm Blush?
A.Nothing special drove its creation. I just tried to create a beautiful color with a good name. You never know if it's going to be a success. Women are very unpredictable.
Q. What makes the blush a hit?
A.Probably the color, the sheen, the sheerness of the texture and probably the idea that you can have an orgasm for the price of a blush. Very easy.
Q.What are your personal favorite NARS products?
A.The Multiple sticks (gloss, eye shadow and bronzer all in one) because they are all fun and easy to use. And they work. I love, of course, all the movie names, because they make me dream.
Q.Where do you draw your inspiration for naming products?
A.Just anything and everything – movies, countries, civilization, music, nature, street fashion, adventure, voyage.
Q:Are products created based on ideas for names?
A.Yes of course, sometimes the name can be first in the "inspiration process" and sometimes the opposite. You create the color first, and then the name that fits. It depends – there are no rules. You watch a fabulous old movie and you suddenly get inspired by it to create a lipstick shade, or you walk through a gorgeous garden and find the most beautiful flower shade for an eye shadow and then you name it.
