Star: Malaysia Exempting ASEAN Cosmetics

Cosmetics From ASEAN Countries Exempt From Registration in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Cosmetics made in Association of Southeast Asian Nation member countries will be exempt from Malaysia's registration requirement starting in 2008, a news report said Monday.

All imported cosmetics currently have to be registered with Malaysia's Drug Control Division in the health ministry.

All 10 ASEAN countries will recognize each other's regulations and product approvals on cosmetic products under a recent agreement, The Star reported.

Malaysia's pharmaceutical bureau will conduct "post market surveillance" of the products, the report said.

A ministry spokeswoman could not be immediately reached for further details.

ASEAN comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
