Within a decade, skincare and makeup trends did a complete switch for the dawning of the beautiful drama of the 1960s.
Following the girlish innocence of the 1950s, the sexy sixties was a striking contrast when it came to makeup and skincare. Gone were the days of embracing the natural look, and instead subtle skin care and cosmetics were replaced with sultry, heavy makeup.
Dark dramatic eyes were all the rage, a look achieved with an abundance of mascara and colored eye shadow. As for the skincare on the general face, translucent powder and super pale lipsticks were a regular contrast to the dark and sultry eyes.
If you were a skincare and cosmetics guru in the 1960s, then all of your focus both during the day and at evening, was on the eyes. Drama was the name of the skincare game, and the darker and thicker the eyelashes, and the more colorful and eye catching the lids, the more alluring you were considered to be. False eyelashes were also a very popular skincare and cosmetics item among TV and movie stars, and while the everyday woman probably did not usually bother getting so done up, the green and blue eye shadows were definitely a must have.
As mentioned above, lipsticks in those days were pale and full of fun iridescence. One Revlon ad from 1969, provided by the website fifitiesweb.com, shows the perfect example of this sort of look,
"Un-noucing 'Un-Lipstick" by Natural Wonder. It's pale but the shine won't fail. Bare, but the color's there (and never, never changes on your lips.) In gleamy little mouth colors like Ivory Blizzard, Frozen Peaches, Sheer Shaver Pink and Nothing Frosted. 24 shades in all."
This shows the popularity of the frosted sparkle without a lot of pigmentation or noticability. The focus was still geared toward the eyes in 1969, and so a perfect pout was considered to be perfectly pale pink!
If you were alive in the 1950s and felt stifled by the popular good girl image, then the 1960s were positively designed for you with its hip skincare trends and dramatically different makeup looks. This was truly the era to be fun, funky, and full of sparkle!
