Women who get breast-enlargement surgery also get a boost in self-esteem and positive feelings about their sexuality, a Florida researcher found.
The study, published in Plastic Surgical Nursing, used two scientific scales to measure self-esteem and sexuality, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Female Sexual Function Index.
The study finds the average self-esteem score in post-surgery women increased from 20.7 to 24.9 on the 30-point Rosenberg scale, and their average female sexual function score increased from 27.2 to 31.4 on the 36-point index. A small number of participants showed no change in the tests after surgery.
Study leader Figueroa-Haas, who was a doctoral student at Barry University in Miami Shores before joining the University of Florida, said in a statement the study provides the impetus for future research related to self-esteem, human sexuality and cosmetic surgery.
However, women should not view plastic surgery as a cure-all for any self-esteem and sexuality issues. Ethical plastic surgeons should screen and rule out potential patients who will never be satisfied with their bodies no matter how much surgery they receive, according to Figueroa-Haas.
